A Sudanese family fees their country, seeking asylum in Thailand. They meet a young filmmaker, newly returned after a decade away from home. Despite their uncertain future, they form a heartfelt bond. They decide to make a film together.

Hours of Ours follows the Ibrahim family’s journey as they navigate the challenges of living in an indefinite transitory state while they wait for approval to be resettled in Canada.

ในปี 2016 คมน์ธัช เข้าร่วมเวิร์กช็อป “การสร้างภาพยนตร์ในคิวบา” โดย Abbas Kiarostami เป็นเมนเทอร์ก็มีผลงานภาพยนตร์สั้น EL CIELO หลังจากสำเร็จการศึกษาจากโปรแกรมวิทยุ-โทรทัศน์-ภาพยนตร์ของมหาวิทยาลัยเท็กซัส ภาพยนตร์สั้นเรื่องแรกสุดของเขาเรื่อง MOTHERLAND ก็ได้ฉายในงานเทศกาลต่าง ๆ เช่น เทศกาลภาพยนตร์ออสติน (สหรัฐอเมริกา) เทศกาลภาพยนตร์เอเชียแปซิฟิกแอลเอ (สหรัฐอเมริกา) เทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติซาเลนโต (อิตาลี) และเทศกาลภาพยนตร์สั้นและวิดีโอไทย (ประเทศไทย)

Exploring migration and belonging, lost histories and identities, reality and fiction, and all the spaces in between, Thai artist and filmmaker Komtouch Dew NAPATTALOONG recently premiered his feature documentary film HOURS OF OURS at Visions du Réel 2023 International Feature Film Competition. For the film, he received support from the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindorn Anthropology Center, Purin Pictures, and The Tan Ean Kiam Foundation-SGIFF Southeast Asian Documentary (SEA-DOC) Grant.

In 2016, Komtouch participated in the “Filmmaking in Cuba” workshop with mentorship from Abbas Kiarostami, resulting in the Cuban short film EL CIELO. A graduate of the University of Texas’s Radio-Television-Film program, Komtouch’s earliest short, MOTHERLAND, screened at festivals including the Austin Film Festival (US), LA Asian Pacific Film Festival (US), Salento International Film Festival (Italy), and Thai Short Film and Video Festival (Thailand).

Women At War

Doris (2023/ Myanmar/ 12:13 min)

It is estimated that over 100,000 people have been displaced by the civil war in Myanmar’s Kayah (Kareni) State following the military coup, and they are now living in camps designated for ‘internally displaced people’ (IDPs). Three women living with their families in a camp for internally displaced people in Kayah (Kareni) State recall how war drove them from their village, and wonder if their dream of returning to a peaceful existence at home will ever come true.

Doris is an active advocate for gender equality in Loikaw. She started her social education as an intern at Kayan Women Organization (KyWO) for 9 months straight. She became one of the pioneering women who launched the first gender equality movement in the land of the Karenni people, as well as also the 2011 Inland Project. In 2012, she transferred to Women Center Loikaw to act as a chair for eight months. Then she founded Women Safe House in 2013 and started taking responsibility for gender-related cases, from June 2014 to August of 2015. In 2017 she joined Yangon Film School Docu-Animation Course. Her animation Kayah Li Li, created during the Docu-Animation course, is a story about a thirteen-year-old rape survivor who describes the day she was attacked in the woods and how, with support from her family and teachers, she has struggled to make a new life for herself despite her traumatic experience. It has been awarded BEST ANIMATION in the 3rd Golden Bee International Children’s Festival, New Delhi, India. In 2023, she received a grant from Exile Hub’s organization and filmed the “Women At War” film. Currently, she volunteers her time to support internally displaced persons (IDP) in Kayah State.

This short film is about a youth revolutionary in urban areas (UG) facing mental challenges. Revolution, hometown, tea, beloved, etc. would be imagined as metaphors.

A Kachin activist flees the turmoil of Myanmar, seeking refuge in the serene landscapes of the Netherlands and anticipating a peaceful life in his new surroundings. However, his hopes are quickly shattered by the weight of survival guilt, homesickness, and loneliness. The film follows his soul-searching journey as he seeks solace through heartfelt interviews with religious priests, monks, and other displaced individuals. Through their insights, the activist delves into the depths of the human spirit, uncovering how they endure the pain of displacement and strive for inner peace amidst adversity.

Zack Tu Nan is a Kachin human rights activist with a professional background in event management. Recently, he embraced his identity as a member of the LGBTQ community, adding this dimension to his activism. Zack engages over 2 million viewers on social media, sharing insights on environmental care, human rights, LGBTQ rights, mental health, and humorous videos with embedded messages. He is now studying documentary directing major at the Netherlands Film Academy, aiming to extend his impact by transforming his activism into powerful visual storytelling.

SALMON
Phoe Thar (2024/ Myanmar/ 04:59 min)

This short story dedicated to the personal feelings of people who are far away from home and those who are no longer able to return home is presented in a poetic and narrative style. The story begins with the voice of a mother who represents “Home”. In order to make the viewers feel a sense of homesickness, the shots that show the family’s warmness, solitude as well as the nostalgic weather conditions of Southeast Asia during the changing seasons are included. At the end of the story, the scene of returning home during sunset is similar to the return of salmon to their homeland and that’s why, with that concept, this story is titled “Salmon”.

အိမ်ဝေးနေသူများနှင့်အိမ်မပြန်နိုင်သူများ၏ ခံစားချက်များ၊ စိတ်ခံစားမှုများကို ဖော်ပြခြင်းဖြစ်ပြီး ကဗျာနှင့်စကားပြောပုံစံဖြင့်တင်ဆက်ထားပါသည်။ဇာတ်လမ်းသည် “အိမ်” ကိုကိုယ်စားပြုသော မိခင်၏အသံဖြင့်စတင်ထားပြီး ကြည့်ရှုသူများအနေဖြင့်လည်း အိမ်လွမ်းခြင်း၏ ခံစားချက်ကို ထပ်တူကျနားလည်ခံစားစေရန်၊ မိသားစုရဲ့နွေးထွေးမှု၊ အထီးကျန်မှု၊ အရှေ့တောင်အာရှဒေသနဲ့နွေးထွေးတဲ့ ရာသီဥတုအကြောင်းကိုသရုပ်ဖော်ကာရိုက်ကူးပြသထားပါသည်။ ဇာတ်လမ်း၏အဆုံးတွင်၊ နေဝင်ချိန်အတွင်း အိမ်သို့ပြန်ရသည့် မြင်ကွင်း၄င်းသည် မွေးရပ်မြေသို့ ဆော်လမွန်ငါးပြန်လာခြင်းနှင့် ဆင်တူသောကြောင့် ဤဇာတ်လမ်းကို “Salmon” ဟု အမည်ပေးထားသည်။

Phoe Thar is a family member of an educational CDMer, working in People’s Radio Myanmar after moving to Maesot. Also a member of the Inter-religious Council For Peace. Completed a video documentary course in Human Colour in March 2024 after attending a 3-month course, and received the first prize in Trauma Documentary (the Scattered Echoes) held by Human Colour.  Participated in making a featured video (Torlan Khukhan Anuratha Doe Athan) as a People’s Radio Myanmar team member in collaborating with Federal Art Space and SEM. I am currently planning on making videos and trying to learn more about video making, and light and sound courses for making videos.

After the coup happened., he was so depressed and started to give up everything. But one day, one of his friends called him to start a media group about the coup. He immediately accepts his friend’s offer and starts a revolution in his own way.

Mi Kon Htaw lives on Bilu Island in the Gulf of Martaban in Myanmar’s Mon State. After graduating from Mawlamyine University with a major in chemistry in 2014, she studied journalism at Burma News International (BNI) and subsequently worked as a digital producer for BBC Media Action and others until 2023. She enrolled at YFS in 2022 where she directed her first short documentary, Dancing with the Spirits. This film received its world premiere at the prestigious Jean Rouch International Film Festival in Paris, France. She has since made the documentaries Missing Home about the plight of women in IDP camps, and Will There Be A Tomorrow? about nurses tending to refugees in Karen State’s conflict zones. In 2023 she joined a YFS crew to film a short fiction film, A Story About Love. Black Lady Sings is her second YFS-produced documentary.

From Burma to Timor-Leste

In 2006 two Burmese migrant workers on the Thai-Burma border thought they had found well-paid work when they were offered an opportunity on a Thai fishing boat. Little did they realize they had become part of human trafficking. Enduring incredibly harsh conditions, unable to leave the boat or return home they finally escaped by swimming to Timor-Leste. In this documentary, they tell their amazing story of exploitation and hardship and how they finally found sanctuary.

Jai Jai is an independent filmmaker born in Shan State, Myanmar. Jai is currently based in the Burma-Thailand border. He left Burma at the age of 18 after graduating high school, to find a better life in neighboring Thailand. He was given the opportunity to work as an intern at “Images Asia Productions” company, which produces documentaries and promotional videos. After completing his internship program, he worked full-time for more than 5 years at Images Asia, as an editor, director of photography, and sound recordist.

Patipat is a director, writing scripts, writing short stories including fiction films, documentaries, and experimental films. He is interested in stories of movement and fluctuations in growth and memory and ikes to observe the possibilities of things around us to realize the impermanence of life. He also founded a film and art screening group called Folktale, which provides space for screening short films, talks, and art. His works also got funded and many award-winning such as Dream of Green City, second prize-winning documentary from the Bangkok Documentary Festival and CCCL Filmfestival Scholarship, 14 Days compliments from Student World Impact, and Black Hole, a short film on Digital rights issues, funded by Engage Media, Philippines.

Her films are used as educational and advocacy tools by civil society and educational institutions. Broken Dreams is a feature-length omnibus film made up of 9 short films that portray the impact of the 2021 military coup in Myanmar. The film covers a wide range of experiences, from the loss of loved ones to the suppression of freedom of expression. Each story is told from a unique perspective, and together they provide a powerful and moving portrait of the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

The film is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Myanmar Diaries, which won several awards at international film festivals. Broken Dreams builds on the success of its predecessor, offering a more in-depth look at the human cost of the coup. The film is also notable for the fact that most of the filmmakers, actors, and crew are in exile to avoid the junta’s persecution for their participation in Myanmar’s Spring Revolution.

Black Ghost – Born in 2000. Starting in April 2021, served as a revolutionary in every way. Right now, he is part of the Daung Ni people’s defense force.

တော်လှန်ရေးအတွက် ခန္ဓာကိုယ်အပြင် သင့်ကိုသင်ပါ စတေးလိုက်ရတဲ့အခါ ဘဝကဘယ်လိုလဲ။ တော်လှန်ရေးကလအတွင်း Mine Accident ကြောင့် တန်ဖိုးတွေပျောက်ဆုံးသွားရတဲ့ Mine လုပ်သူ လူငယ်တစ်ဦးရဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်း။ သူတို့ဘဝမှာ အခက်ခဲဆုံးအချိန်တွေကို ရင်ဆိုင်ရတဲ့အခါ မိခင်နဲ့သားကြားက ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာကို သင်မြင်တွေ့နိုင်ပါစ်သည်။

He joined the revolution movement after the coup while studying Burmese (distance) in his last year. In September 2021, he began studying military science and proceeded to learn mining in December of the same year. He is currently undergoing medical care after being injured in a mine explosion while serving in the Kant Blu District. Currently, he is learning the fundamentals of documentary filmmaking in a Camellia-organized workshop, and he has started filming My Notes to Spring alongside Longyintin and Camellia.

အာဏာမသိမ်းမီကာလတွင် မြန်မာစာအဝေးသင်နောက်ဆုံးနှစ်ဖြင့်ပညာသင်ကြားနေရင်း အာဏာသိမ်းပြီးနောက်ပိုင်း တော်လှန်ရေးထဲဝင်ရောက်ခဲ့သည်။  ၂၀၂၁ စက်တင်ဘာတွင် စစ်ပညာကိုစတင်သင်ကြား ခဲ့ပြီး ထိုနှစ်ဒီဇင်ဘာလတွင် မိုင်းပညာကိုဆက်လက်သင်ကြားခဲ့သည်။ လက်ရှိ ကန့်ဘလူနယ်ရင်းတစ်တွင် တာဝန်ထမ်းဆောင်ခဲ့ရင်း မိုင်းကွဲထိခိုက်ကာဆေးကုသမှုခံယူလျက်ရှိသည်။ လက်ရှိတွင် Camellia စီစဉ်သော မှတ်တမ်းရုပ်ရှင်သင်တန်းတွင် အခြေခံလေ့လာခဲ့ပြီး My notes to spring ကို လုံးကြီးတင်နှင့် Camellia တို့ဖြင့်အတူရိုက်ကူးခဲ့သည်။

A Buddhist fable-like story about the guilt of a childhood incident of killing an ant while washing hands in the sink. Animated through photographic sequences painted with gold and gray, the Zen-like visuals sweep into one
another with whispering monologues and glitching noises reflecting the realms of cosmos, power, guilt, prayers, and existence.

ရုပ်ရှင်သည် ငယ်စဉ်ကလေးဘဝ အဖြစ်အပျက်မှ အပြစ်ရှိကြောင်း ဗုဒ္ဓဒဏ္ဍာရီပုံပြင်တွင် ဇင်ရုပ်ပုံများနှင့် စကြဝဠာများ၊ တန်ခိုးနှင့် တည်ရှိမှုကို စူးစမ်းရန် တိုးတိုးလေးပြောသော monologues များကို ပေါင်းစပ်ထားသည်။

Moe Myat May Zarchi (born in 1994, Myanmar) is a filmmaker, musician, and multidisciplinary artist. Her short films have been screened at Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, Women Make Waves Int’l Film Festival and have won awards at the Singapore International Short Film Festival (SGIFF), Bangkok Asean Film Festival (BAFF), Minikino
Filmweek and UK Asian Film Festival. She is the Prince Claus Seed Awards alumni as well as the upcoming
Berlinale Talent 2024. In most of her works, Moe loves to explore the metaphysical, identity, femininity, and personal aspects through innovative use of visuals and sound. She also founded a cinema magazine and organization called “3-ACT” to support cinema education in Myanmar.

When her 8-year-old daughter suddenly loses her mother tongue after the death of Gee, her Burmese maid, the mother, Da, decides to take a trip to Ranong, a Thai-Burmese border town in search of the only relative of the maid. She feels her daughter still retains a mysterious bond with the spirit of the maid, which is the source of her daughter’s strange behavior. With the aid of the local Burmese doctor at the center of the Burmese community in Ranong, they encounter the world of Burmese laborers. The trip to Ranong forces Da to revisit her unresolved past. The closer she comes to finding out about Gee’s only relative, the more deeply she dwells on her unredeemed past. Hom, on the other hand, has made a new Burmese friend, Thar Gyi, who has been left to live alone after his father went missing on a fishing boat at sea. Through similar traumatic experiences, the two children have forged a special bond. A few days’ search for their maid’s relative has become a spiritual and psychological exploration of their own lives.

Gee ကွယ်လွန်ပြီးနောက် မိခင်ဘာသာစကား ဆုံးရှုံးသွားသော ၈ နှစ်အရွယ် မိန်းကလေး၏ မိခင် Da သည် Gee ၏ တစ်ဦးတည်းသော ဆွေမျိုးကို ရှာဖွေရန် ထိုင်းနိုင်ငံ ရနောင်းမြို့သို့ ခရီးထွက်ခဲ့သည်။  သူတို့သည် မြန်မာအလုပ်သမားလောကနှင့် ကြုံတွေ့ရပြီး မဖြေရှင်းနိုင်သော အတိတ်ကို ပြန်ကြည့်ကြသည်။ထိုအချိန်တွင် ဖခင်ဖြစ်သူ ပျောက်ဆုံးသွားပြီးနောက် အထီးကျန်နေသော ကလေးငယ်တစ်ဦးဖြစ်သော ဗမာမိတ်ဆွေဟုန်သည် သာကြီးနှင့် အထူးနှောင်ဖွဲ့ထားသည်။

Sopawan Boonnimitra is an independent filmmaker.  She started her career in film as an assistant director and has a background in arts and exhibits her art an international level.  Her first feature film, The Isthmus, was selected for New Currents at Busan International Film Festival in 2013.   Her documentary film, The Caved Life, was nominated for several national awards in 2020.  

Peerachai Kerdsint began his career as an assistant director and spent a few years as a producer of documentary programs for television. During that time, he broadened his perspectives on several issues that still have a powerful and enduring influence on his work. 

Both of them are now working on a trilogy of documentary films on education and the youngsters who have been awakened by political events in the past few years.
